Set out from your Kandy hotel in the morning for a short drive into the Knuckles Mountain Range, rising above the hills around 35km east of Kandy. The range is so-called as its folds and peaks supposedly resemble those of clenched fist – judge for yourself when you arrive. In Sinhalese the mountains are known as Dumbara Kanduvetiya, roughly translated as misty mountains. The weather can turn quite sharply here so it’s best to be prepared; however, your personal trekking guide will be the best judge of conditions on the day and will know the best ways to ensure a memorable trek throughout the region on any day of the year. Most visitors will do a 2-3 hour horseshoe shaped trek in the Forest Reserve, but there are longer full day trails and even overnight treks where you will camp for the night in a spectacular spot in the heart of the Knuckles Mountain Range.
