Winding your way slowly through the Hill Country, around endless tea plantations, through thick forest, over remarkable bridges, through countless tunnels, stopping every now and then at old colonial stations (which British travellers of a certain age will find very familiar!) is a real delight. The line runs from Colombo up to Badulla, deep in the hills, and depending on where you are staying and the length of your itinerary there are lots of rail journeys of differing lengths that we can include on this line. Arguably the most scenic is the stretch of track that runs between Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) and Ella which is easily slotted into most tours that are passing through the hills. Some of the trains have 1st class observations cars at the rear with more comfortable seating and large rear-facing windows looking back along the track. We will always try and get you booked into one of these observation cars, although as trains can only be booked up 2 weeks in advance and usually sell-out, this cannot be guaranteed.
