Tour of the city of Manaus – visiting the main points of interest
Manaus, whose Indian name signifies “ land of the short man”, was founded in 1848. It is located by the Rio Negro (Black River), specifically 1.250 km from the river mouth and 17 km from the confluence of the Solimoes River with the Black River.
In 1880, together with the city of Belém (State of Pará), it became the most important free port of the whole region, due to the large demand of rubber that happened worldwide. The Indians already knew this material, but it was only in 1842, thanks to Charles Goodyear who discovered the vulcanization process, that it was introduced in the automotive industry.
This discovery provoked a mass arrival of population and transformed the city into a real cultural centre.
Eduardo Ribeiro, governor in 1892, undertook major construction projects throughout the city, such as pavement of avenues, public lighting and the construction of squares as well as of the Port. But the reflection of this period, one of its biggest symbols, is to be found in one monument in particular, the Amazonas Theatre.
During our visit, we’ll get to know the vibrant, colourful and very exotic floating town and its histories. The Alféndega or Aduana building for example, was constructed in Great Britain and brought there stone by stone. Another 20th century imported British construction, was the Adolfo Lisboa municipal market. With its obvious Parisian inspiration and Art Nouveau style, it became a meeting point for all of Manaus’ habitants.
The major concentration of the free trade zone stores is located in front of the Port. Other buildings of interest are, the Metropolitan Cathedral, a traditional meeting place situated in Osvaldo square, as well as the Municipal Library.
The already mentioned Amazonas Theatre, work of Charles Peyronton, was opened in 1896, during the opulent period of the rubber boom. It was prefabricated in Britain and its construction prolonged itself for practically two decades, using only European materials. Exhibiting a mix of many architectonical styles, this Italian renascence building, with its neoclassical columns and staircases, has its interior spaces greatly decorated with spectacular candelabra, luxurious paintings and magnificent wooden floors. These wooden floors consist of 12000 wooden pieces, perfectly laid together, without the use of any nails or glue. It has a 700 spectators capacity and is nowadays Manaus’ cultural centre. The Theatre has undergone subsequent restorations; the last of these was in 1990. ThE TOUR ENDS AT THE AIRPORT.

During our walk in Pelourinho we´ll visit the Rosário dos Pretos Church, this church started to be constructed in the beginning of the XVIII century, by the religious members of Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos do Pelourinho. Almost a year was necessary for concluding it. The front, in rococo style, has beautiful towers. Visitors can appreciate its beautiful tiles, its altars in neoclassic style and three images from the XVIII century – Our Lady of Rosário, São Antônio de Cartegerona and São Benedito. Behind the building there is an old cemetery of slaves.
