An ideal location for a stop on the journey between Colombo and the Cultural Triangle is the ruined Arankele Forest Monastery. Believed to date as far back as the 3rd century BC (although most of what you can see dates from the 6th century AD), the monastery is a fascinating place to stroll around with your guide and the long, perfectly straight, stone walk directly behind the main monastery (over 500m in length) provides a very tranquil place to stretch your legs. The monastery is in a remote location and little visited by tourists and there is a good chance you will have it all to yourself. We can include a special picnic lunch during the stop to enjoy in these most tranquil of surroundings.
